What I Did During the Snow Storm

top
Well I did quite a bit since we weren’t able to get out of the house for four days!
snowstorm2011
Here’s one thing I did – I changed a few of my candles and candle sticks on my fireplace and…
candlesticks
I made 33 felt circles into a very colorful garland for my fireplace! We needed something happy and cheery to look at as it was so cold and gray outside.
feltcircles
This is the first time I ever did the blanket stitch so some of my stitches aren’t that even :) But that’s the fun thing about handmade items…they don’t have to be perfect to be pretty!
fireplacegarland
This project is from a tutorial by Anna Maria Horner from 2006 (this is why I have a mile long list of projects I want to do). I’ve been meaning to do it since then!
detail
Since we couldn’t go anywhere I thought it was the perfect time to do this project. All you need is felt – I know 4 squares of felt are $1.00 at Hobby Lobby and some embroidery floss. Last time I bought embroidery floss it was 35 cents a skein at HL. I already had all the materials which was good since I wouldn’t have been able to get out to buy anything anyway!
candles
Here’s the link to her tutorial for the Felt Garland. She has photos and very clear instructions so I won’t bother to do one too. This does take time! Time to cut out the circles and time to stitch them together - but I had nothing but time! I think I've watched about 7 movies this week!
end
May you have a happy and colorful weekend!

Hi from B.C., Canada, ManWELLa! Ooo! Aren't we all in need of some CoLoR? h.e.l.l.o. Love all the "spots" of color you've "lit up" your room and mantle with! Delicious! Simply delicious! Happy Cabin Fever!

I love the garland, and I'm putting that on my to do list, really cute. You got alot done, we were also snowed in for a while but I just layed around like a fat rat in a wool sock. You are so creative.

That's darling, Manuela! It's such fun--just right for these cold days and for heading into February.

I find it hard to believe how harsh this winter has been here in the South. It was so nice to have the snow on Christmas, but now we're all getting a little tired of the cold. Of course, I know what we get is nothing compared to up North, but then again they're better equipped to deal with it!

Hope the work on your house is going smoothly. I know it'll look wonderful when you're ready to put it on the market!

Hi Manuela. :o)
Your mantel looks fabulous! I love the colors and your felt circles are the perfect touch! :o) Don't worry about the stitches not being perfect - that is what adds charm. :o) I am working on hand quilting today with chunky thread and really enjoying it. I also saw a few examples on Anna Maria Horner's web page. She sure is creative isn't she?
I hope you are having a great weekend and are keeping warm. :o)
Sincerely, Trish

Cute garland! I love the colors!

I came down your way to drop my son off at college and ended up getting stranded at my parents' house for five days! I just got home last night. Wish I'd been closer to you and I would have helped with the garland. I certainly had plenty of TIME!

It looks stunning with the shot stepped back from the fireplace where you can see the whole arrangement.

You inspire me! It is beautiful.

My project I've had "on the back burner" is to make a lot of yo-yo's with some vintage reproduction fabrics I've had for YEARS.

I'm thinking next week would be a good time to start. More snow is on the way then. ;)

We got snow and ice here in SC. No school for 3 days and by day four, I had cabin fever! LOL!

Your mantle makes me smile with all the happy colors. Hope you are unthawing now and can get out of the house:)

Hello dear Manuela,
Well, that is one way to stay sane during a snow storm! A bright and cheery way, too!
I really like it, I have thought about doing something like that in the past, but never have. I love yours, it is very pretty and old fashioned looking.
Glad the snow finally stopped for you, we have been getting a lot of snow. It stopped for Saturday and we got out of town for the day and it started up again today. Oh well, it is January in Manitoba, what else would we expect?
Hugs, Cindy

Your mantel is so colorful and definitely cheery! We've gotten some really cold days in Florida. I'm ready for spring! :) I hope to get busy with my projects as soon as I hit the 2nd trimester in this pregnancy. The morning sickness/exhaustion has worn me out!
