What I Did During the Snow Storm
Well I did quite a bit since we weren’t able to get out of the house for four days!
Here’s one thing I did – I changed a few of my candles and candle sticks on my fireplace and…
I made 33 felt circles into a very colorful garland for my fireplace! We needed something happy and cheery to look at as it was so cold and gray outside.
This is the first time I ever did the blanket stitch so some of my stitches aren’t that even :) But that’s the fun thing about handmade items…they don’t have to be perfect to be pretty!
This project is from a tutorial by Anna Maria Horner from 2006 (this is why I have a mile long list of projects I want to do). I’ve been meaning to do it since then!
Since we couldn’t go anywhere I thought it was the perfect time to do this project. All you need is felt – I know 4 squares of felt are $1.00 at Hobby Lobby and some embroidery floss. Last time I bought embroidery floss it was 35 cents a skein at HL. I already had all the materials which was good since I wouldn’t have been able to get out to buy anything anyway!
Here’s the link to her tutorial for the Felt Garland. She has photos and very clear instructions so I won’t bother to do one too. This does take time! Time to cut out the circles and time to stitch them together - but I had nothing but time! I think I've watched about 7 movies this week!
May you have a happy and colorful weekend!

Have you still lots of snow?
Melx
We are getting lot's of snow today! I hope that I can get out soon though. 4 kids-trapped in a house with little food (today is shopping day)... NOT FUN!!!!

Hi from B.C., Canada, ManWELLa! Ooo! Aren't we all in need of some CoLoR? h.e.l.l.o. Love all the "spots" of color you've "lit up" your room and mantle with! Delicious! Simply delicious! Happy Cabin Fever!
I love the garland. It is so bright and homespun-looking. I may have to try a variation of it for my home.:-)
I love this Manuela!
Lovin' the nice pop of color, great for this time of year:@)
Hi Manuela! I've missed you! I love how your mantle looks. All those sweet red candle holders with the pale blue candles! Love it.
Your little garland is so cute!! Hope you're staying warm.
be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Your fireplace mantel looks so cute! I love the garland and you did a great job stitching. Great pop of color!
Very colorful, Manuela! Nice to have something to offset all that white! : )
I love the garland, and I'm putting that on my to do list, really cute. You got alot done, we were also snowed in for a while but I just layed around like a fat rat in a wool sock. You are so creative.
looks very nice, love the color. we are still snowed in. Well not really we still get out in it even if we have had 50 inches so far! ;)
We've been snowed in, too. That felt banner is a cute idea. Love how your mantel looks.
Happy Snow Days!
It's cute as can be, and so colorful! I see you've changed up some candle colors. Or is it my monitor?
Brenda
Oh so pretty and such happy and cheerful colors. Love the garland, it looks gorgeous. Hugs, Marty
It is so cheery - you're right - we all need some brightness during these cold winter days!

That's darling, Manuela! It's such fun--just right for these cold days and for heading into February.
I find it hard to believe how harsh this winter has been here in the South. It was so nice to have the snow on Christmas, but now we're all getting a little tired of the cold. Of course, I know what we get is nothing compared to up North, but then again they're better equipped to deal with it!
Hope the work on your house is going smoothly. I know it'll look wonderful when you're ready to put it on the market!
Hi Manuela. :o)
Your mantel looks fabulous! I love the colors and your felt circles are the perfect touch! :o) Don't worry about the stitches not being perfect - that is what adds charm. :o) I am working on hand quilting today with chunky thread and really enjoying it. I also saw a few examples on Anna Maria Horner's web page. She sure is creative isn't she?
I hope you are having a great weekend and are keeping warm. :o)
Sincerely, Trish
Looks like you got a lot done - and it is all so cheery too! Hope the sunshine and beautiful weather is soon coming your way!
Nice to see you back and I really enjoyed the garland..the blanket stitch in contrasting colours is great fun, too! Nice job..
Love your happy garland! I didn't do anything creative while we were stuck inside... JUST cleaned which I really needed to do! Enjoy your weekend! HUGS!
I also have had this project of hers on my mind since 2006! I even started it once. Yours looks amazing!
Phyllis :)
How cute and cheerful looking! Looks like you accomplished a lot more than I did while snowed in. :D
Got a lot of errands, etc. done today until the wind got pretty cold.
Looking for Spring. :)
Enjoy your weekend.
Glenda
Cute garland! I love the colors!
I came down your way to drop my son off at college and ended up getting stranded at my parents' house for five days! I just got home last night. Wish I'd been closer to you and I would have helped with the garland. I certainly had plenty of TIME!
It looks stunning with the shot stepped back from the fireplace where you can see the whole arrangement.
You inspire me! It is beautiful.
My project I've had "on the back burner" is to make a lot of yo-yo's with some vintage reproduction fabrics I've had for YEARS.
I'm thinking next week would be a good time to start. More snow is on the way then. ;)
Sooo bright and cherry! Love it :-)
You made it all so pretty and cheerful. Love the colors Manuela!
Love the bright colors on this gray winter day. Mimi
Your mantel looks so bright and cheerful with your colorful candlestick holders and cute garland. I love getting snowed in!
We got snow and ice here in SC. No school for 3 days and by day four, I had cabin fever! LOL!
Your mantle makes me smile with all the happy colors. Hope you are unthawing now and can get out of the house:)
Very pretty, Manuela!
Hugs,
Donna
It's wonderful! I enjoy felt garlands. I made one that looked like leaves this fall.
Its so cute and cheerful! I love how the finished result looks so pulled together.
I love it. So bright and cheery.
Hello dear Manuela,
Well, that is one way to stay sane during a snow storm! A bright and cheery way, too!
I really like it, I have thought about doing something like that in the past, but never have. I love yours, it is very pretty and old fashioned looking.
Glad the snow finally stopped for you, we have been getting a lot of snow. It stopped for Saturday and we got out of town for the day and it started up again today. Oh well, it is January in Manitoba, what else would we expect?
Hugs, Cindy
A perfect way to spend a snow day! I am really digging the colors!
Very sweet felt garland!
I love the garland. I need to find time for one of those.
Four days with nothing but time?! What fun... reminds me of a yo yo quilt.
Enjoy your week!
Leann
Your mantel is so colorful and definitely cheery! We've gotten some really cold days in Florida. I'm ready for spring! :) I hope to get busy with my projects as soon as I hit the 2nd trimester in this pregnancy. The morning sickness/exhaustion has worn me out!
The whole mantel looks so cute and colorful!
What a great way to spend the cold day!
Manuela, What a cute project! Snow days are the best for catching up on projects, and we had plenty of snow! I just love all of the color you add to your home. It makes everything so cheery!
Have a wonderful week!
Jennifer
Cutest garland EVER! ....smiles....
So cheerful! What a great project to do while trapped at home. Thanks for the inspiration!
Andrea
So cute! laurie
I love how colorful and cheery this looks, especially in the middle of a snowy, bleak winter season.
We need a bit of cheer and color in these dark winter days. Great idea!
