Ferns & Urns

If you look around my house you'll notice that I obviously love toile but that I also like urns. Never met an urn I didn't like! As a matter of fact as you approach my house you'll be welcomed by two black (spray painted by the way) urns. I always plant a fern in them in the summer.

In the house I recently planted some urns with smaller ferns. Did you guys get your Home Depot Garden Club coupons (from the HD GC giveaway I had)? There was one for buy one house plant get one free so I bought two ferns. I already had an asparagus fern.

I had one white urn but the others were all different colors so I spray painted them all different shades of white. All these ferns are in my living room usually. I had to take them outside to take a picture because it's pouring rain and I just couldn't get a good picture of them inside.

I really love the simple unfussiness of ferns when planted in a pretty urn. Oh and I repaint my urns all the time!

I think ferns inside the home and out are just the perfect summer time plant!

LOL! O.K. the sun came out for a hot minute so I whisked them back inside where they usually are!

To answer some questions people have asked recently:

The Plates in my 4th of July post with the gingham, flowers and flags say modahome.com on the back. Although I got mine at a local shop. They seem to have lots of cute, cute plates!

I used deck paint in white from Lowe's for the black and white checkerboard pattern. They couldn't mix black deck paint for me so I used exterior black paint. I didn't go to HD or anywhere else to see if they had black deck paint.

The mirrored pediment on top of my china cabinet came from Michael's years ago.

The teapot in the teapcup birdfeeder post is just hanging from an old Shepard's hook.

The colored chalk that I use on my chalkboard I got from ebay - it's called Chalk Ink - Amazon usually carries it too

I love the ferns in the urns, too. Must plan on having some next year. I previously had asparagus ferns outside in the summer, then bring them in for the winter. Thanks for the reminder - I had forgotten how much I use to enjoy them. Sally

Those are beautiful! My grandmother had several urns in her home, as well, and I've always wanted one (or a few) of my own.

How beautiful! I love the black urns at the front door, and the white urns are fab, too. The ferns look so great in them.

I LOVE ferns - have a total obsession right now. And I've been coupling mine with another obsession - moss. Should I go for the trifecta and transplant to my urns - oh my! Yours are all beautiful!

I love urns too. My favorite one of yours is the one with the sweet cherub on it. The green ferns look wonderful in both the black and white painted urns!

Those look great! I don’t have any ferns…I wonder if they would hold up to Texas heat.

Wonderful urns...I think I'm missing out by not paying closer attention to the statement they make. What material are they made of that you can paint them so easily?

I love the white urns with ferns and ivy. So pretty!
Hmm, makes me wonder if some of the ferns in front of my house would work inside.

Lovely! I found an asparagus fern yesterday growing wild in my flower garden! I may have to pot it when the weather turns cold!

What a fabulous collection of urns! I love ferns, but Audley is not a fan, so it's very rare I get to decorate with them. I really love the way yours are arranged!
I have an urn that needs a paint job, so I'll have to fill it with something great when I'm finished! =)
Have a wonderful evening,
Jennifer

Manuela,

The ferns look wonderful in those urns. They look very old fashioned, kind of Victorian :) I especially like the Black Urn.

Have a wonderful day!

Very pretty! I love ferns and find they do *beautifully* while outside during the summer. However when it gets cold and I have to bring them in, mine always die. )o:

I love your urns! They all look so pretty. I also loved how your deck turned out! Just amazing! Didn't that give you any back pain? I guess it was very worth it. It came out fabulous!

Hmmm, I never think about ferns because I love flowers so much, but I love how that boston fern looks in your front porch urn!

Love your ferns and urns! What's not to love about decor items that rhyme :) You inspire me with your willingness to paint and repaint. I have a stool in my house that is now on its 4th paint color (it has room-hopped over the years), but other than that, things tend to stay the same color for awhile.

Hi Mauela,
I appreciate you making comments on my blog.
I love urns as well, I just yearn for an urn. Ah, bad corny joke.
Do you plant directly in them?
Or is another pot inside of that?

I have a little collection of urns too. One of my daughter's centerpieces at her wedding were little rusty/white urns filled with hydrangea. They were stunning. I bought a small pot of scotch moss this year and I think I'll have to try it in an urn. Thanks for the inspiration. I haven't been around for awhile trying to catch up! Love what you did to your deck floor. It's gorgeous! Mimi

I noticed you have asparagras firn in some of your urns. Do yourself a favor and NEVER plant asparagras fern in anything but pots. I put it in as a bedding plant a few years ago and it took over. The main problem is that now when I want it out the roots are so matted no one and I mean no one can get a shovel through the roots!! I don't know what I am going to do. I could use the rototiller but then all the soil will have to be sifted to get out the roots and the little soft eggie things it has in the roots too. I am not sure I could handle the tiller as the roots are to the top of the soil and rock hard. Anyway...just a reminder to you all to NOT plant it in the ground!! It took me half an hour of digging to get a patch 8"x8" in an easier area on the perimiter of it. Manuela you are again an inspiration to us all! Beautiful!! Just Beautiful!! Jody
